Cherry Blossom
There is perhaps no better way to welcome spring to America than in our nation’s capital, Washington D.C. Long heralded as the greatest spring festival in the country, for more than 100 years the blooming of the National Mall’s cherry blossoms marked the beginning of spring in a spectacular explosion of flowers through the trees. These trees were a gift from Japan in 1912 and have been a delight to the thousands of visitors from around the nation and world who come to view the trees. Initially 3,020 trees were gifted from 12 different varieties—Now there are more than 3,700 trees all over the mall. Each year peak blooming varies because of the weather and seasonal variables, but typically the end of March and beginning of April is when most trees in the area will flower.
